International Holocaust Remembrance Day: Why This Day Matter

January 27 is an important date to the UN because it is the date they officially recognize and remember the deaths of Holocaust victims, and to remind us all of the discriminatory and hateful acts that may happen in the future.

Because of the above reasons, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is not simply a day on the calendar, but an opportunity to reflect, learn, and internalize responsibility.

International Remembrance of the Holocaust

The Day of International Holocaust Remembrance is an acknowledged date in the UN calendar and occurs annually on the 27th of January. It is the only worldwide observed day that commemorates the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million men, women, and children of the Jewish faith who were victims of the Holocaust, and we also remember the other numerous victims, like the Romani, disabled victims, and victims of Nazi persecution, among others.

Each January 27th, we are reminded that the world can not remain silent nor indifferent when it comes to acts of injustice.


Why is January 27th Significant?

January 27th is a historically significant date for its recognition as the day Allied troops liberated detainees of Auschwitz, one of the largest and most notorious concentration camps operated by the Nazis.

As a result, January 27th was selected by the UN as a day of International remembrance. This choice of date will help educate the future to ensure history does not repeat itself.

What is the origin of this International Day?

In 2005, the Holocaust remembrance day and its corresponding International Day of Observance were officially recognized by the UN. Member States concluded that remembering the Holocaust was vital for peace and the protection of human rights.

Since, the World\’s Observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day has gained recognition. Celebrations and events are conducted by educational institutions, governmental bodies, museums, and private organizations.

The UN clearly states the construction: remembering history is vital to preserve human life.

In recent years, the relevance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day has increased. Modern society still struggles with hatred, discrimination, and denial, and these are all issues we are faced with every day.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is important because it is the day that people the world over recognize the importance of:

  • Educating people about the consequences of hate.
  • The importance of Respecting the world’s diverse cultures.
  • The Upholding of Human Rights, dignity, and equality of all people, and
  • Warnings about the Enduring threat genocidal acts and mass violence.

Countries all over the world observe this day in many different and meaningful ways. Nation states conduct official ceremonies and governments and cities and municipalities present documents. Candlelight vigils are done in memory of the victims.

Approximately 86% of people today observe this International Day of Remembrance using the Internet for the global community, sharing documents, The Testimony of Survivors, and content.

The world observes this day, united in The Respect for the Truth.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an annual commemoration that counters denial and misinformation about the Holocaust. Denial of the Holocaust serves to spread hate and falsehoods.

The day serves to promote:

  • Critical and civil discourse
  • Listening to Holocaust survivors
