The country’s youngest nation commemorates South Sudan Independence Day on July 9. The day acknowledges the persistent fight for freedom and self-governance while also marking the country’s independence.

Each year on the anniversary of gaining independence, South Sudanese people tell the story of their history. While South Sudan celebrates independence with parades and other events designed to instill pride and transparency, they have unfortunately received a fair bit of scrutiny not only internally on how they manage their state but also externally. In fact, South Sudan holds the unfortunate title of being one of the most least visited countries in the world.


What Is Special July 9, 2011

The world’s youngest nation marked its birth as it South Sudan officially gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011.

As a result of enduring incessant civil wars for decades on end, the South Sudanese were granted the opportunity to vote in a referendum to split away from Sudan, which overwhelmingly supported divorce.

This vote was honest as it was conducted in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement . It strove to end the Africa’s longest bloody civil conflict, which lasted longer than 20 years because of the absence to an effective power sharing agreement.

On this historic date, citizens flooded the streets of Juba, the new capital city, to witness the flag raising ceremony. It was sure a historic moment unprecedented in the history of South Sudan, and indeed, many of its refugees around the globe. The atmosphere was incredible as boundless jubilance reigned in South Sudan’s Capitol.

It has become a South Sudanese tradition or custom to celebrate this day as a holiday. The date as well as South Sudan as a location are both acknowledged globally, even though many forget them very often. However, the independence is meant to fought for and cherished.

Activities people do:

  • Flag and symbol ceremonies
  • Cultural parades and exhibitions
  • Addresses from political figure heads
  • Community and religious song and dance
  • Public gatherings and prayer gatherings

Through all of these, the challenges can be set aside, because there is prideful and united strength.

Independence of South Sudan acts as a a new startresilience, and aspiring goals for the people.

  • Black stands for the people of South Sudan
  • Red for the blood that was shed to acquire freedom
  • Green for the country’s land of rich breathtaking natural resources.
  • Blue for the Nile river.
  • And finally Golden Star stands for unity, and hope

The colors give an image of the country both it present, as well as its vision for a greater future.


🌍 Global Recognition

South Sudan was recognized globally right after gaining independence.

South Sudan became the 193rd member state of the United Nations on July 14,2011.

A lot of leaders around the globe conveyed support for the country to reach stability and development.


🚧 Problems and Solutions

Since achieving independence, South Sudan struggles with the issue of political conflicteconomical instability, and humanitarian issues.

Although, there is continous effort for peace through dialogue and resolution.

These people work alongside local entities towards sustainable peace and community development.

South Sudan Independence Day is not only a celebration, but a reminder of the people’s strength and the sacrifices made for the country alongside the dreams envisioned.

Every South Sudanese living globally celebrates their independence on the 9th of July.
