H

The leather jacket is not just another trendy item of clothing. It possesses a rich history that portrays a marked shift in the cultural norms of society. This jacket, throughout the years, has served as a military requirement, evolved into a counterculture symbol and finally became a style statement worn across the world. In this blog, I will discuss the life cycle of leather jackets and deep dive into its monumental relevance in the fashion industry.

Beginnings: Used By Soldiers In The Field

The history of leather jackets dates back to the 1900’s and is intertwined with the history of world wars. Fueled by the desire to protect military pilots from frigid temperatures while flying in open cockpits, the leather flight jacket or bomber jacket was introduced. These jackets were constructed using tough leather to withstand the extreme wearing conditions and also came with fur liners to warm them during flights.

Later on, in the 1930’s, the United States Airforce started using the industry standard leather jackets leading to mass production and popularity of these jackets.

The 1950s: Hollywood Rebels

The leather jacket belonged to soldiers during the WWII period. Hollywood leather jackets became a part of movies showing signs of rebellion, especially among the youth.

  • One of the first to adopt the leather jacket was Marlon Brando who wore it in 1953 in the movie The Wild One earning its status as a bad boy a classic staple.
  • In Rebel Without a Cause, James Dean wore it too which turned it into a must-have for rebellious teenagers.

This years also marked the end of the Perfecto jacket which was a cropped zipped motorcycle jacket made by Schott NYC. It became the uniform of greasers and bikers and non-conformist.

The 1960s and 70s: Rock and Roll Vibes

The ’60s and ’70s rock music saw the leather jackets grown to fame. The BeatlesThe Ramones, and The Rolling Stones were marked for wearing leather jackets as their signature statement.

During this time leather jackets symbolized counterculture and anti-establishment. Punk rockers excluded themselves from ripped and studed versions of jackets marking an era of chaos against controlled fashion.

During the 1980s, pop culture gave a new boost to the leather jacket:

  • Michael Jackson turned the red leather jacket into an icon with his song Thriller.
  • Tom Cruise brought back military-inspired jackets with the G-1 flight jacket in Top Gun.
  • Action stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone made leather jackets a must-have for tough guys.

We also saw the grunge look hitting the scene in the 90s. Dark, oversized leather jackets were popularized by Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

The 2000s To Present: A Fixed Fashion Must Have Wrinkle-Free

Nowadays, both men and women own leather jackets which are now many styles, i.e., classic bombers, sleek moto jackets, and minimalist cuts. Fast fashion brand and luxury stores still keep reinventing the design.

Trends may change but leather jackets are always in style. They are functional and fashionable pieces of clothing, providing warmth, durability, and style all at once.
