It is a day that honors the people and history of the S\u00e1mi, an indigenous group who live in the northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. It is a time to celebrate and to raise awareness of the S\u00e1mi people, their culture, and their rights and heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whatisthehistoryofsminationalday\">WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF S\u00c1MI NATIONAL DAY?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first S\u00e1mi National Day was celebrated in&nbsp;<strong>1993<\/strong>&nbsp;after an agreement was reached at the&nbsp;<strong>S\u00e1mi Conference in Helsinki<\/strong>. Each year on&nbsp;<strong>February 6<\/strong>, the S\u00e1mi celebrate the anniversary of the first S\u00e1mi congress that took place in&nbsp;<strong>Trondheim, Norway, in 1917<\/strong>. This was the first time the representatives of the S\u00e1mi people from Norway and Sweden met to discuss their interests and issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The S\u00e1mi people and their culture have been an important part of history, and to celebrate them is an important part of history as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"traditionsandcelebrations\">Traditions and Celebrations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S\u00e1mi National Day is celebrated with a mix of&nbsp;<strong>traditional and modern activities<\/strong>. The S\u00e1mi people are culturally, linguistically, and ethnically distinct, with unique ways of dressing and subsisting. Traditionally, most communities engaged in&nbsp;<strong>reindeer herding, fishing, hunting, and handicrafts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S\u00e1mi history is full of legends, stories, and other exciting forms of art! One of these artistic manifestations is&nbsp;<em>joik<\/em>, a type of musical performance which is one of the globally awed and still lived musical practices in Europe today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whyissminationaldayimportant\">Why is S\u00e1mi National Day Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the S\u00e1mi people, it is a celebration of their strength and resilience over the years, as well as a celebration of all the injustices they continue to face and the injustices they continue to face.
