Celebrations begin on May 18, and are held throughout all cities and villages in Somaliland, while Hargeisa is the capital that receives the most amounts of attention for parades and acts of national pride.Flag raising ceremonies, as well as traditional music and dance performances are just some of the common activities celebrated. On this day, people can witness public festivities across Somaliland, such as youth parades and school performances. The day is also marked with stunning fireworks. Somaliland’s diaspora in countries such as the US, Canada, and the UK also celebrate in unison.

Although Somaliland operates independently, and has informal diplomatic relations, it still remains unrecognized by the UN and most countries.

Supporters argue that Somaliland has maintained peace and stability for over 30 years through democratic elections. Other factors include having an established police, military, and legal system. Although challenges remain, the case for recognition is quickly growing.

✊ Why This Day Matters

Aside from flags and merrymaking activities, Somaliland Independence Day means somethings more special:

Every country and people’s right to self-determination.

The Somaliland People’s Resilience.

The Somaliland People’s expression of hope for a peaceful, democratic future.

📝 Final Thoughts

May 18 is profoundly and symbolically an important date for the people of Somaliland.
